Cerradas
Postpartum Sealing

A moment to honor yourself

I learned about "la cerrada," or bone closing, from my teachers, whom I have followed for five years and continue learn from them . During a trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, I discovered that bone closing is meant to help close various life cycles, such as ending a relationship, moving to a new place, or quitting a job. By closing our bones, we release stored memories that can affect our perceptions and emotions. This process allows previously unexpressed feelings, such as happiness or sadness, to move freely.

Around the world, various practices aim to care for new mothers, all designed to aid healing by providing warm, protein-rich foods and bringing warmth to their bodies. In Latin America, traditional postpartum care is practiced within the first 40 days after birth. Labor is believed to be a "cold" time when the body opens up and remains open for the initial days of healing. The practice of "la cerrada," or sealing, aims to restore warmth to the body and close the bones. This ritual honors the completion of a significant cycle: gestation, birth, and the first 40 days postpartum.

The Postpartum Sealing includes

  •  Herbal bath

  • Massage

  • Cerrada with rebozos / Bone Closing

The postpartum sealing is a moment to honor your body and your story.

Instructions for the day of the sealing:

Eat something light before the appointment.

If your baby needs to eat during the visit, there is no problem. We will allow the time for them to feed.

Please have a large pot with one to two gallons of hot water ready to boil.

The herbal bath will be in your tub/shower. Have towels and socks ready.

In a bedroom, make a space on the floor where the massage, closure and bandaging will be performed. I'm going to bring a mat to put on the floor. Have a sheet ready; it might get  stained with oil.

Finally, you will need to have your pajamas or pants and a blouse that covers your back and chest well.

After the closing, if you can have something ready for you to eat that is light like broth or atole.

  • The postpartum sealing lasts for 2:30 - 3 hours.

The way I approach this offering....

I recommend and encourage families to schedule at least 1 to 2 postpartum appointments. During these visits, we will take the time to get to know each other and begin the process of the Cerrada. I approach this with the understanding that some birth stories may require more time to process, and I will honor your unique experience throughout our sessions.

During this time, I also offer Bach flower remedies on an individual basis, which can support your healing journey.

The timing for scheduling the Cerrada can vary from 1 to 2 weeks after your first appointment, depending on how you are feeling. The appointments are included in the initial fee, but if additional visits are necessary (beyond the first two), a supplementary fee will apply.

FAQs

When is the best timing to do the sealing ?

The postpartum sealing does not have to be done exactly at the end of the 40 days. It can be performed whenever you feel ready to close and honor your cycle. For some, this might be at 6 weeks, while for others, it could be at 5 months.

Can I feed my baby during the sealing?

Yes, we can always take a pause.

What if I had a belly birth (c-section), can I still do a bath?

Yes, unless you had an infection which can take the healing process a little longer or if there is an active infection.

I’m not sure if I have diastasis recti (separation of muscles). Is that something you can check?

Yes, I can check for diastasis recti during the massage and provide support to the muscles if needed.

Do I need to have someone to help with the baby?

It is encouraged to have a support person to help with the baby. If you do not have someone to help it is okay, we can also have a slower pace if needed.
